A notorious criminal involved in 78 cases of burglary, theft and under the Arms Act has been arrested by the East Delhi Police. Hansraj alias Raj is facing trial in as many as 30 cases and is a proclaimed offender in many cases of burglary in Delhi and neighbouring States.

A burglary was reported in the jurisdiction of the Geeta Colony police station this past Sunday, following which the local police activated their informers under the “Eyes and Ears Scheme”. They zeroed in on Hansraj, who was spotted moving around in a sports utility vehicle carrying some merchandise. Hansraj, who presently stays at Shalimar Garden in Uttar Pradesh, was arrested. Thirteen laptops, 10 computer monitors, a central processing unit, a printer, house-breaking equipment, a pistol and five live cartridges were allegedly seized from him. His vehicle was also seized.

During interrogation, he purportedly told the police that he had stolen the goods from a showroom in Rajasthan during a burglary along with his accomplices Manoj, Devender alias Lambu and Sanjay.

A native of Azamgarh in Uttar Pradesh, Hansraj took to the life of crime in 1994. He started stealing grills and manhole covers, and later formed a gang. The gang then started committing thefts at wine shops and showrooms.

Hansraj has invested the ill-gotten money in real estate and owns properties in Azamgarh, Badarpur, Shalimar Garden and Jagatpuri, the police said. He keeps changing his address to avoid arrest and gave different addresses each time he was arrested, as a result six dossiers had to be prepared, the police said.
