‘Criminal’ held

A 22-year-old notorious criminal has been arrested for allegedly being part of a gang involved in several cases that extorted money from industrialists in Bawana on the outskirts of the Capital.

Acting on a tip-off, a Delhi Police Crime Branch team led by Inspector Naresh Chander and comprising Sub-Inspector Arun Dev Nehra, Assistant Sub-Inspector Vinod and Head Constable Sandeep laid a trap near Rithala metro station on December 1 and arrested Deepak alias Deepa when he came in a white sports-utility vehicle.

Deepak purportedly told the police that he along with Neeraj Bawana and his accomplices had made threatening calls to factory owner Anoop Goyal and demanded Rs.3 lakh. Similarly, the gang had made extortion calls to Santom Hospital owner Dinesh Modi and demanded Rs.25 lakh as protection money.

The gang is involved in several cases of contract killing, attempt to murder and extortion in the Bawana Industrial Area, the police said.
