The Delhi Government had announced as early as July this year that a total of 73.5 lakh people of 1.68 crore will benefit from the food security scheme.

However, Anjali Bharadwaj of Satark Nagrik Sangathan pointed out that earlier 90 lakh people were covered under the Public Distribution System and now the figure has reduced by almost 20 lakh. “The Delhi Government is essentially saying that it not really a reduction in numbers but there are a substantial number of bogus ration cards,” she said.

When asked about this, Food and Civil Supplies Secretary S.S.Yadav told The Hindu that the figure is merely a ceiling set by the Union Government on how many people will be covered by the Centre. “Beyond this, the State Government will take a call on how many people to bring under the purview of the scheme. This will depend on the number of people who are deemed eligible under the scheme. This figure can increase depending on the eligible persons,” he said.
