A police sub-inspector was killed in broad daylight here on Tuesday while trying to control violence in the Garden Reach area of the city over filing of nomination papers for a local college election.

Tapas Chowdhury, 55, of the Special Branch was shot at from close range. He was later declared dead at a private hospital.

Four rounds of bullets were fired and bombs hurled during the violence.

V. S. Nesakumar, Deputy Commissioner of Police, Port Division, told journalists that a clash between members of Trinamool Congress Chhatra Parishad (students’ wing of Trinamool Congress) and Chhatra Parishad (students’ wing of Congress) who are contesting elections at Harimohan Ghose College led to the violence.

State Home Secretary Basudeb Banerjee said that four persons including Sheikh Suhan, the prime accused, were arrested. He was seen by locals brandishing a gun and shooting the policeman from point blank range in an image captured by certain television channels.
