Accusing the Congress of attempting to a make political capital out of minor issues, Deputy Chief Minister Sukhbir Singh Badal on Wednesday claimed that the law and order situation in Punjab was better than in any other State in the country.
Mr Badal, who also holds the Home portfolio, was talking to journalists after launching an Internet portal and a toll free number at the Punjab Police headquarters here. The facility would seek to record suggestions and feedback from the citizensespecially those had been denied “fair treatment” by the police at the lower level. However, it would not replace the police station as first line of complaint.
Providing details, he said those citizens who did not receive justice, could seek redress by registering their complaints at the “Citizen’s Portal” at the website www.punjabpolice.gov.in or through a toll free phone (800-180-2082) which would regularly be monitored by the office of the Additional Director General of Police (law and order). This office would send a daily report to Mr Badal.
He said the State government had decided to separate investigation and policing wings to provide more transparency and effectiveness in the system.
Citing the failure of the Congress to provide evidence for its previous campaigns to malign the government, Mr Badal said that Opposition was attempting to politicise minor incidents.
On the murder of ASI Ravinderpal Singh in Amritsar, he said the police had arrested the accused within six hours of the crime and exemplary punishment meted out to the erring police officers.
An ADGP was personally monitoring the investigation where the SHO of Chheharta had been dismissed and one more personnel was suspended. He said that the murdered ASI's daughter was appointed as Naib Tehsildar by the State Cabinet.
He said that unlike during the Amarinder Singh tenure, when the Chief Minister issued “clean chits” even before an investigation was launched, the present Akali Dal-BJP government acted promptly in every case. Claiming that the law and order situation was under control, Mr Badal said during last five years the police made record seizures of RDX and explosives as well as prevented numerous tragedies by pre-emptive action against top terrorist organisations and arrests of hardcore ultras. Punjab unit president of the Congress Amarinder Singh said that launching a web portal or a toll free number would not solve the problem as long as the Akali jathedars ruled the police stations.
