NEW DELHI: The Congress candidate from South Delhi, Sajjan Kumar, on Sunday said the Congress-led UPA Government at the Centre took special care for the social and economic empowerment of women, their education and employment during its five-year rule.

Addressing a large number of women from South Delhi who came to his residence to pledge their support to the Congress, Mr. Kumar said the Manmohan Singh Government had ensured social security to women through the enactment of laws against domestic violence, sexual exploitation at work places and female foeticide.

Mr. Kumar said the Congress had always safeguarded the rights and interests of women and encouraged their empowerment.

Also, he said, the party had provided them political power through 33 per cent reservation in the panchayats and the civic bodies. Besides, welfare schemes like Laadli for the girl child have been introduced in Delhi to empower them financially.

Mr. Kumar said the party had time and again shown its concern and care for women in ample measure.

He expressed confidence that the women of South Delhi would extend their support to him and ensure his victory.

The gathering was also addressed by president of Delhi Pradesh Mahila Congress Abha Chaudhary and Mehrauli District Mahila Congress president Rajendri Sehrawat.
