Even as a probe has been ordered to ascertain the exact cause of the building collapse, neighbours such as Maslauddin said the ongoing construction work in the adjacent building had weakened its foundation. Another resident said: “The construction was, at worst, an accelerator to what was inevitable. The family had built two more floors illegally during renovation last year and the construction was shoddy. There were no pillars to support the structure and the walls were thin. How do you expect such a structure to stand erect?”
Most residents gave different answers when asked about the date when the building was originally constructed.
