To address the menace of female foeticide, Sankaracharya of Kanchi Math Sri Jayendra Saraswathi Swamigal distributed cash awards of Rs.1lakh each to 10 eligible families at Sri Devi Kamakshi Mandir here over on the weekend for nurturing their girl child and for their education and marriage.
At a meeting in Ludhiana on March 28, Sri Jayendra Saraswathi Swamigal had announced a scheme to award Rs.1lakh each to families that encouraged the birth of the girl child. The meeting was organised by Nanhi Chawan, a non-government organisation under the patronage of Punjab Deputy Chief Minister.
It was announced that underprivileged couples who had three girl children, the last one having been born on or after April 1, 2011, could send their applications to the Kanchi Math, seeking financial help for nurturing, education and marriage of those girl child. They were also required to send enclosures such as proof of their identity, copy of their ration card to indicate whether they are in the BPL category and valid proofs of the date of birth of the girl child such as the school certificate or the municipal certificate.
