On New Year’s eve, differently-abled persons will stage a candlelight vigil outside the Vice-President’s residence here to express their resentment over non-passage of the Rights of Persons with Disabilities Bill in Parliament.

According to National Centre for Promotion of Employment of Disabled People honorary director Javed Abidi, there was general consensus after hectic consultations with all stakeholders that a candlelight vigil needs to be held outside “Vice President Hamid Ansari’s house on December 31 because it was in the Rajya Sabha that the Bill was not introduced.”

“The vigil will start from 5 p.m. and continue till midnight. What was the hesitancy in at least tabling the Bill on the floor of the House? We are not targeting anyone, but since the Bill could not be passed in the Rajya Sabha on December 18 because of adjournment of Parliament sine die, we decided to hold a candlelight vigil outside Mr. Ansari’s house. But it will be a peaceful protest.”
