A special court on Friday remanded to 14 days’ judicial custody two businessmen arrested for allegedly siphoning off crores of rupees in conducting fitness tests for commercial vehicles in the Capital.

Nitin Mahawat, Director of ESP India, and Puran Chand Tamta, CEO of ESP India’s alliance partner Tambros India Ltd, were remanded to custody till March 15 by Special Judge B. R. Kedia. The two had been arrested by the Anti-Corruption Branch of the Delhi Government on February 25 and remanded to police custody till Friday.

The arrests were made on a case registered by the ACB pursuant to the complaint of RTI activist Vivek Garg alleging that the contract for lane tests of commercial vehicles before granting fitness certificates was awarded by the Delhi Government to ESP India without inviting any tender.
