No suicide note found, police suspect it to be a case of suicide

He owned several properties in Delhi, Haryana and Uttar Pradesh

NEW DELHI: A 42-year-old businessman was found dead with a bullet wound in his head under mysterious circumstances in his house at Narela here on Sunday. Although no suicide note has been found, the police suspect it to be a case of suicide.

Ashish Pal Khatri owned several properties in Delhi, Haryana and Uttar Pradesh. He had rented out some of the properties, including two to a bank and a famous retail chain, which fetched him a handsome amount. He was also constructing a hotel at Vrindavan in Uttar Pradesh.

Enquiries by the police revealed that Ashish returned from Vrindavan on Saturday evening after which he allegedly consumed liquor, had his dinner and then locked himself in the room. His wife Babita went off to sleep in another room.

On Sunday morning when he did not open the door despite several knocks, Babita called up their 22-year-old son Sandeep who was in Chandigarh. He contacted some of his relatives and friends, who broke open the door. The body of Ashish was found lying in a pool of blood. An unlicensed firearm lay nearby, the police said.

According to the police, circumstantial evidence indicated that Ashish had shot himself in the right temple with the firearm. “However, the post-mortem will ascertain the real cause of his death,” said a police officer, adding that Ashish’s wife told them that around 1 a.m. she had heard a sound similar to that of a fire-cracker, which in hindsight could have been a gunshot.

Relatives being questioned

Suspecting it to be a case of suicide, the police are questioning Ashish’s relatives and friends to find out why he took the extreme step. They are also trying to find if the businessman had recently suffered any financial setbacks.
