Disparities in VAT laws criticisedNEW DELHI: The Confederation of All-India Traders (CAIT) on Friday criticised "continuing disparities and anomalies in Value Added Tax (VAT) laws of different States'', claiming that it was jeopardising trading activities in the country.

CAIT alleged that non-implementation of several important decisions, guidelines and directives of the Empowered Committee of State Finance Ministers had led to a "tax war'' among States on certain commodities. Traders across the country are also agitated over non-phasing out of the Central Sales Tax, it said. "A uniform taxation system across the country and one single common market are the basic essentials of a successful VAT regime.''

Office-bearers of ex-Servicemen panelNEW DELHI: Elections to the National Ex-Servicemen Co-ordination Committee, Delhi, were held in here this past weekend. Various organisations of ex-Servicemen participated in the elections.

B.C. Joshi was elected president, while R.B. Kashyap, J.P.S. Pathania and S.M. Upadhaya were elected vice-presidents. Ram Kumar was elected general secretary and Om Prakash treasurer.

Mr. Joshi and Mr. Kumar said the organisation was committed to the welfare of war widows, ex-Servicemen and their dependants.

Trinagar market renamedNEW DELHI: The main market of Talaab Road in Trinagar here has been renamed after the late social worker and academician Babulal Sharma. Outer Delhi MP Sajjan Kumar inaugurated the renamed road on Friday. Among those present were local Councillor Amritlal Singhal and son of Mr. Sharma, Kamal Kant.

Mr. Sajjan Kumar remembered Mr. Sharma for his selfless service and work in the field of academics.

Minister inaugurates MRI machineNEW DELHI: Delhi Health Minister Yoganand Shastri on Friday inaugurated nation's first twin speed whole body 3 Telsa MRI system machine with HDX platform at IHBAS hospital in East Delhi.

"Maitri Vriksha''NEW DELHI: "Maitri Vriksha'', a function dedicated to the National Day of Russia, was organised at the Russian Centre of Science and Culture (RCSC) here on Friday. Organised jointly by RCSC and International Federation of Indo-Russian Youth Clubs, the function included a cultural programme.
