NEW DELHI: In keeping with the decision of the BJP central leadership to raise the issue of alleged misuse of the Central Bureau of Investigation by the United Progressive Alliance Government at the Centre at various platforms, the Delhi unit of the party organised a protest at Jantar Mantar here on Wednesday.
The protestors, led by the party's Delhi unit president O. P. Kohli, also submitted a memorandum to the Prime Minister demanding that misuse of the CBI be stopped immediately and its independence, autonomy and impartiality be ensured. The protest march began from Jantar Mantar. A large number of Delhi BJP office-bearers, MLAs, councillors and workers of the districts and mandals of the party participated in the demonstration.
Present in strength
Central leaders of the BJP including national general secretaries Thawar Chand Gahlot, Vijay Goel and Dharmendra Pradhan, national secretaries Santosh Gangwar, Arti Mehra and Vani Tripathi, and a number of prominent Delhi leaders such as Nand Kishore Garg, Ramesh Bidhuri, R.P. Singh, Pravesh Varma, Pawan Sharma and MCD House leaders Subhash Arya were present on the occasion.
The protestors then began moving towards Parliament. They were stopped by the Delhi Police which had put up barricades outside the Parliament Street police station.
The party leaders were unanimous in charging that the UPA Government was “guilty of politicising and misusing the CBI''.
They charged that the Congress-led Government has been using the country's premier investigating agency for pressurising political leaders and political parties to continue in power. “The UPA is also using the CBI for saving the people connected with the ruling parties and harassing the opponents,'' they alleged.
“The Government also misused the CBI for saving itself from the situation arising out of the ‘cut motion' in the recently concluded Budget session of Parliament,'' they asserted.
In the memorandum submitted to the Prime Minister, the Delhi BJP also alleged that it was “at the instance of the Government'' that the CBI becomes suddenly active against some important persons while at other times it goes soft on them.
