For making casteist remarks against party worker
Bharatiya Janata Party legislator Kulwant Rana was arrested after a court here on Monday directed he be taken into custody in connection with a case registered against him for allegedly making casteist remarks against a party worker.
Mr. Rana, who represents Rithala in the Delhi Assembly, has been chargesheeted under the Scheduled Castes and Schedules Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities Act) and was taken into custody after he surrendered before Additional Sessions Judge Kamini Lau.
Though he moved an anticipatory bail after his surrender, the court rejected it saying the nature of offences alleged against him were serious. A member of BJP's Kisan Morcha had made the complaint against Mr. Rana.
While directing his arrest, the court noted that there was no provision of anticipatory bail under the SC/ST (PoA) Act and remanded him in judicial custody till April 26.
The judge also noted that despite being repeatedly being summoned by a magisterial court, Mr. Rana was avoiding appearance.
The police had registered an FIR against Mr. Rana on January 24 on Karan Singh’s complaint. He alleged that the casteist slur was made by Mr. Rana on January 20 against him in public after elections to a local body in Rithala.
