Haryana Governor Jagannath Pahadia said on Thursday that the State Government had given away cash awards worth Rs. 23 crore to about 7,000 sportspersons during the past five years.
Speaking after conferring the Bhim Awards at a function in Raj Bhavan here, he announced that Rs. 10 crore would be given as scholarships to 5,000 sportspersons next year.
He urged them to work hard and focus on their games alone to bring laurels to the State and the country in various national and international events. While appreciating that the sportspersons of Haryana had performed very well in the recent Commonwealth and Asian Games, he said there was no dearth of sports talent in the State.
Chief Minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda said his regime was giving priority to promotion of sports and nurturing of talent.
Mr. Pahadia conferred the Bhim Award on Dinesh Kumar of Bhiwani (Boxing), Suman Kundu of Jind (Wrestling), Anil Kumar of Jhajjar (Judo), Kavita of Hisar (Boxing), Jayati Pathak of Yamunanagar (Taekwondo), Sunita Devi of Rohtak (Paralympics athletics) and Gyanand Singh of Bhiwani (Paralympics athletics). They were given a cash award of Rs. 2 lakh each apart from a Bhim idol, a scroll, a blazer and a tie.
Other sportspersons were also honoured on the occasion.
