A 48-year-old assistant sub-inspector (ASI) with the Delhi Police was killed in a fire that broke out in a house in Shahdara here in the early hours of Saturday.

The deceased has been identified as Manoj Gaud who was posted at the Police Control Room of East Delhi district.

According to the police, around 12.45 p.m. while Manoj’s family was asleep on the second floor of their two-storey house, a fire broke out at a boutique on the ground floor. The boutique is owned by Manoj’s wife Geeta. The blaze spread across the ground floor and Manoj rushed to douse the flames and suffered serious burns. The fire department was also informed about the incident.

Fire tenders were rushed to the spot and Manoj was taken to a nearby hospital where he was declared brought dead. While post-mortem would ascertain the exact cause of the death, investigations so far have revealed that it could be a combination of asphyxiation and burn injuries that led to Manoj’s death, said the police. Manoj, who had joined the police over a decade ago, is survived by his wife and three children.
