NEW DELHI: A truck driver has been arrested for allegedly stealing about 10 tonnes of iron girders from a Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) construction site in Green Park here this past week. A site engineer is also under the scanner in connection with the theft, the police said.

The owner of Dharampal Transport Company lodged a complaint with the police on December 11 saying that one of his truck drivers, Pappu, had unloaded a truck carrying about 10 tonnes iron girders at some unknown place on December 6 and fled after parking the truck at a DMRC construction site in Green Park.

Taking up investigation, the police arrested Pappu in Deer Park. During interrogation, he purportedly told the police that a DMRC engineer at the Green Park construction site told him that he could earn easy money if he unloaded the girders at a scrap dealer’s shop in Uttam Nagar. He accordingly unloaded the truck carrying iron girders at the scrap dealer’s shop and was paid Rs.35,000.

The scrap dealer, Mukesh, promised to pay him Rs.1 lakh later. Pappu then went to his native place in Uttar Pradesh and returned recently to take the remaining amount.
