Launching stylish designer creations for the middle class
NEW DELHI: Kolkata-based designer Kiran Uttam Ghosh has derived inspiration from Egyptian costumes to come out with her new autumn/winter collection for the Wills Lifestyle India Fashion Week starting here in the Capital this Wednesday.
Titled “Chiconomics”, Kiran's collection means smart economics and has been designed to target the burgeoning middle class population across the country.
“I have designed my collection keeping in mind people who want to buy designer stuff at affordable price. For my show this coming Saturday, I have also created a luxury pret line and used lot of golds, high necklines and textures. My work is Indian with a global feel. There is Hindustani aesthetics and, this time round, I have used less embellishments and embroideries but used more textures,” said Kiran during a dress rehearsal here on Tuesday.
Describing her collection of 30 pieces as a serious one, Kiran said she has introduced the element of fun to break the monotony. “It took me one and a half months to come out with this collection. And the hectic schedule didn't give me any time to relax,” says Kiran, who definitely looked tired after a gruelling schedule from morning to afternoon.
Pointing out that fashion has undergone a sea change from the time she made her entry into the industry about a decade ago, Kiran says fashion extravaganzas like Wills Week are being organised in a professional manner. “I must give full credit to the Fashion Design Council of India for giving a good launching pad to the experienced as well as those who are new entrants in this competitive field. It looks after the designers' community.”
Kiran abhors the current strategy deployed by some designers of making Bollywood stars as their show stopper in fashion weeks. “I have really no desire to use the stars of our Hindi film industry as my models. I agree that Bollywood is a big platform for some but I don't want to use it for my collection. My clothes are my heroes.”
At the end of the day, what matters for a designer is how much sales or orders he has registered than colour pictures of international ramp scorchers splashed in glossy magazines: “Surely business is the main driving force behind all this hectic preparation. Right now we are in eight countries and 25 stores across the country.”
For her collection, the look is effortless chic. It has bejewelled or metallic neck lines, yokes, metallic embellishments and the unusually controlled colour palette. The collection has shades of ivory, taupe, mocha, mustard, olive, indigo, wine and black. Gold, silver, copper, bronze and their antique versions serve as links that bind the collection together. .
