Four persons arrested from Balasore in Orissa

NEW DELHI: The Crime Branch of the Delhi police claim to have cracked the sensational double murder of two women lawyers at their Siddhartha Enclave residence in South Delhi on March 11 with the arrest of four persons in Orissa. Stolen jewellery and precious stones worth lakhs have been recovered from them.

Seventythree-year old Swarana Mahajan and her 48-year-old daughter Anuratha, both practising lawyers at the Delhi High Court, were found gagged to death inside their flat on March 12 morning. Investigations by the Anti-Extortion Cell of the Crime Branch revealed that the culprits had sneaked into the flat after breaking the bathroom window. The flat was found ransacked, indicating that the intruders killed the women with the intention to commit theft.

According to Joint Commissioner of Police (Crime Branch) Ranjit Narain, the police prepared a list of criminals with similar modus operandi and also that of domestic helps, plumbers and others who visited Siddhartha Enclave almost on a daily basis. A team comprising Sub-Inspector Naresh Solanki was formed to search the local miscreants and domestic helps who were found missing after the incident came to light. The team also probed the antecedents of the domestic helps who had earlier worked in the colony but had left. After interrogating more than 300 people, the police zeroed in on one Bhaskar Mahalick, who earlier worked in a flat near the Mahajans about 18 months ago.On March 11 night, watchman Pandav, who was then posted at the main gate, had seen Bhaskar and three others entering the colony on foot.

a police team launched a hunt for him. He was traced to his native place in Orissa. During interrogation, Bhaskar allegedly confessed to having masterminded the murders.
