“Delay in taking the breathless girl to hospital”

Suffered asthma attack while attending a class

“Medical facilities at the school were not adequate”

NEW DELHI: A day after young Aakriti Bhatia of Modern School in Vasant Vihar here died of an asthma attack, her parents lodged a complaint with the police on Wednesday alleging negligence on the part of the school authorities.

Seventeen-year-old Aakriti, a Class XII student, had suffered the asthma attack on Tuesday morning while attending a class. The school authorities took her to Holy Angel Hospital where doctors declared her brought dead.

Accusing the school authorities of delay in taking the breathless girl to hospital, Aakriti’s uncle Raman Verma said on Wednesday: “She has died due to negligence on the part of the school authorities.

When Aakriti complained of breathlessness, the school authorities called for a vehicle from the house. She was taken to hospital in our car and declared brought dead there. Had they called for an ambulance immediately and taken her to hospital, she could have been saved. Why did they wait for a vehicle to arrive from her house? It is gross negligence on their part. We have lodged a complaint against the school authorities and want action against them.”

Alleging that the medical facilities at the school were not adequate, Mr. Verma said: “They charge such hefty amounts as medical fees from the students but do not have competent staff for the purpose. Even the nurse who attended to Aakriti didn’t know how to put on the oxygen mask. Aakriti’s younger brother too is studying in the same school. We have serious apprehensions about his and the other students’ security as well.”

The school authorities, however, denied the allegations, asserting that they had acted according to the situation and handled it responsibly.

A large number of parents and children also took out a candlelight march near the school on Wednesday evening in memory of Aakriti.

Meanwhile, the Delhi Commission for Protection of Child Rights has issued a notice to Modern School seeking an explanation for the death of the girl.

“It seems the school is not well-equipped to handle a situation like this. It was probably due to complete mismanagement that the girl died. We have sent a notice to the school Principal seeking explanation on the medical preparedness of the institution. She has been asked to reply within seven days,” said Commission member Sarita Sarangi.

The police have also initiated inquest proceedings.

“We have received a complaint from the girl’s family alleging negligence on the part of the school authorities. We are investigating the matter in the light of the complaint,” said a senior police officer.
