Targets about 450 illegal establishments
Civic body also carried out encroachment-removal drives A large number of traders seek permission to change their trade
NEW DELHI: The ongoing sealing drive in the Capital by the Municipal Corporation of Delhi gained some momentum on Thursday as its squads targeted about 450 illegal commercial establishments and ongoing constructions across the city. During the drive that remained by and large peaceful, the MCD squads targeted commercial establishments in basements and on other floors except ground floor. Apart from Rombus School running from a basement in Malviya Nagar, gymnasiums, godowns and shops engaged in polluting businesses were sealed.
More than 90 shops were targeted in Shahdara (South) Zone, while 75 illegal commercial establishments were sealed in Najafgarh Zone, 55 each in Shahdara (North), City and Rohini Zones and 20 in Central Zone.Areas cover during the drive included Old Seemapuri, Subhash Park, Sonia Vihar, Brahm Puri, Yamuna Vihar, Mahipalpur, Dwarka, Nangloi, Greater Kailash, Sukhdev Vihar, Lajpat Nagar, New Friends Colony, Sarita Vihar, Amar Colony, Madhu Vihar, Mandawali, I.P.Extension, Pandav Nagar, Gandhi Nagar, Vivek Vihar, Jhilmil Colony, Tri Nagar, Rohini, Pitampura, Malviya Nagar and Karol Bagh.
The MCD teams also carried out encroachment-removal drives at a few places where illegal shops were removed from public and government land. Shahdara (North) Zone's Court Commissioner Sanjeev Bhandari conducted an inspection in Seelampur and ordered removal of encroachment at the local market targeting nearly 650 shops. Similarly, encroachments were also removed in Greater Kailash-II. Meanwhile, at Town Hall, a large number of traders met senior MCD officials and leaders seeking permission to change their trade to avoid sealing of their shops. In a recent statement, Municipal Commissioner A. K. Nigam had clarified that no take action would be taken against shops meeting daily needs of the people, while all the other illegal trade and businesses would be targeted.
Trades covered in the list include fruit and juice, vegetable, flourist, bakery, dairy, meat and poultry, tailoring, confectionary and general merchant, stationary, chemist, barber, beauty salon (except from branded ones), small halwais, photocopy, PCO booths, cyber-cafes, laundry, flourmill and pan and cigarette shops. "Traders have been seeking permission to shift to approved businesses in their areas so that their shops are not sealed. ," said MCD Leader of House Jitender Kochar.
