Targets around 300 illegal commercial establishments

  • Civic body squads also demolished illegal structures at two properties of MP D. S. Yadav
  • Four traders detained who threatened self-immolation during the sealing drive

NEW DELHI: Amid protests at several places by angry residents and traders, the Municipal Corporation of Delhi continued with its sealing drive on Wednesday targeting around 300 illegal commercial establishments in various parts of the Capital.

The MCD squads also demolished illegal structures at two properties of Member of Parliament D. S. Yadav at New Rajdhani Enclave in East Delhi. At Greater Kailash-I market, the police detained four traders who threatened self-immolation during the sealing drive, while a Bharatiya Janata Party Councillor was also held for disrupting the exercise at Mansarovar Park.

Despite the drive entering its fifth day on Wednesday, the MCD officials seemed clueless on how to carry forward the drive in a more systematic way. This led to traders levelling allegations of wrongful sealing and unnecessary harassment in violation of the guidelines issued by the Supreme Court.

The civic body's squads faced protests by traders and local residents at Janakpuri, Greater Kailash, Rajinder Nagar, Mansarovar Park, Seemapuri and Wazirpur Village. At Mansarovar Park, BJP Councillor Divya Jaiswal was detained along with some of his supporters when he protested against the use of force by the police during the drive. The BJP also held a dharna against the sealing and demolition drive at Shahdara Chowk.

At Greater Kailash-I market, the police were sent into a tizzy in the afternoon when some traders carrying liquid-filled bottles threatened to immolate themselves. The police personnel immediately seized the bottles and detained at least four of thems.

However, it was later revealed that the bottle contained no inflammable liquid but merely coloured water.

During the drive, the MCD squads mainly target businesses illegally operating from basements and other floors in residential areas. At Rajinder Nagar, they targeted lawyers' offices and doctors' clinics also, while at Malviya Nagar and Lajpat Nagar godowns and hazardous businesses were sealed. Similarly more than three-dozen godowns were sealed at Bhajan Lane near Tis Hazari.

More than 50 properties each were sealed at Shahdara (North), Najafgarh and Rohini Zones. However, the drive remained slow in other zones as only 16 illegal commercial establishments were targeted in Narela Zone, eight in Central Zone, seven each in City Zone and West Zone and four in South Zone.

Areas that were covered during the drive included Nangloi, Dwarka, Mahipalpur, Vasant Kunj, Janakpuri, Punjabi Bagh, Kotla Mubarakpur and Sarita Vihar. .
