`Duped a senior citizen of Rs. 8.5 lakhs'
NEW DELHI: A junior engineer of the Delhi Development Authority has been arrested by the Economic Offences Wing (EOW) of the Delhi police Crime Branch on charges of cheating a senior citizen of Rs. 8.5 lakhs on the pretext of providing her a flat.
The EOW received a complaint from Noor Bano alleging that DDA engineer Ata-ur-Rehman cheated her. Noor Bano and her husband, who retired from the post of driver in a Government firm, were introduced to Rehman by one Firoz. Rehman claimed that he could arrange a flat for them at Jafrabad for Rs. 4.48 lakhs and also demanded Rs. 75,000 as commission for the work.
He also got a special power of attorney in her name made for a person who was allotted a flat by the DDA at Jafrabad, but the documents had been made for another flat. However, an unsuspecting Noor Bano and her husband paid Rs. 4.48 lakhs in the form of demand draft and Rs. 2.25 lakhs in cash on different occasions. Once he got the money, Rehman allegedly started avoiding the complainant. When she asked him to refund the money, Rehman claimed that he would return the amount in instalments. He gave a cheque for Rs. 1.55 lakhs as the first instalment, but it bounced.
Acting on the complaint, the police launched a hunt for Rehman. He was declared a proclaimed offender in the case, following which the police arrested him.
