NEW DELHI: Members of the Yamuna Sports Complex in Surajmal Vihar observed a “black day” outside DDA’s office at Vikas Sadan here on Sunday to protest against the closing down of their sports complex. “We are protesting because the Authority has abruptly closed down most of our sporting facilities for building venues for the upcoming Commonwealth Games. We have been asking the DDA to take the members into confidence and disclose its plans. But the DDA is neither maintaining transparency nor having any meeting with the members to discuss the matter,” said Complex convenor Sanjeev Bhasin.

While welcoming the development and renovation work, Mr. Bhasin said the DDA should have updated the members about the nature of the construction work. “The Yamuna Sports Complex belongs not only to DDA but all its members, most of whom are life members. As life members, we have equal rights and must be allowed to participate in the development of the complex.” said Mr. Bhasin, adding that members have been denied access to the stadium facilities.

The members have written to the Chief Minister, the Lieutenant-Governor, DDA Vice-Chairman and other officials.

‘Not stakeholders’

Meanwhile, DDA Director Sports Alok Swarup, who is also director of Commonwealth Games, said it would be incorrect for members to describe themselves as “stakeholders”.
