NEW DELHI: Safdarjung airport in the Capital is ready for a makeover with the New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC) taking up a project to beautify the airport area and build a park-and-ride facility there.
Through a dedicated route, the airport will be directly connected to Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium, one of the venues for the upcoming Commonwealth Games in the Capital.
A proposal to this effect was granted administrative approval at a meeting of the civic body recently. The plan, to be implemented in consultation with the Airports Authority of India, mainly envisages development of a parking lot for 3,000 cars and two-wheelers and 450 buses besides construction of new roads within the airport premises. The proposal entails widening and resurfacing of several nearby roads and improvement of walkways. The project also includes installation of jersey barriers between the main tarmac and parking area; provision of water, sewerage and electricity supply for the parking area; construction of new gates and improvement of existing gates of the parking area; provision of closed-circuit television cameras; and construction of utility structures including public conveniences, public information centres, crew waiting area and security chambers.
