NEW DELHI: In view of the Delhi Government’s recent proposal to bring the Municipal Corporation of Delhi under its jurisdiction, MCD Leader of Opposition J. K. Sharma has decided to meet Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit later this week.

‘Reduced powers’

According to sources, most of the Congress councillors are against a division of the civic agency as it would diminish their roles as municipal councillors. A senior Congress councillor said: “Councillors are naturally resisting the move because if the MCD is divided into two or three parts we will have less control and reduced powers.” Sixty Congress councillors had also passed a resolution recently opposing the Delhi Government’s proposal to divide the MCD’s 12 zones into different parts that would be answerable to the State Government. “We have decided to meet the Chief Minister and request her that the councillors should be consulted before taking any decision in this regard,” said Mr. Sharma.

The councillors are also unhappy with the Delhi Government’s recent move to reduce their local area development funds from Rs.2 crore to Rs.50 lakh following failure of the councillors to fully utilise the funds before their expiry.
