NEW DELHI: Indraprastha College for Women, the oldest girls’ college in Delhi, is all set to open its second hostel for students from the coming new academic year.
The new hostel called “Indraprastha Women’s Hostel” will have a capacity to accommodate 200 girls. It will be ready for occupancy from the 2009-10 session.
The college had a hostel -- “Kalavati Gupta Hostel” -- constructed way back in 1952 that housed over 200 girls.
Located opposite the college building, the new hostel is spread over 1.53 acres.
Equipped with recreation and medical facilities along with a modular kitchen, the three-storey building has been built at a cost of Rs.10 crore. The grants for it came from the University Grants Commission and some generous donations from the college alumni.
Since the North-East Commission also provided a part of the financial grant, 30 seats in the hostel will be for the girls from the North-East.
“The new hostel has all the modern amenities and the rooms are well furnished. We have left open space in the complex for the girls to pursue outdoor games. We have exchange programmes with foreign universities also and when these students come visiting us, they may also stay in the new hostel,” said college media coordinator Manasvini M. Yogi.
The apartments of the warden and the superintendent will be in the hostel building.
A seat in the “Kalavati Gupta Hostel” will cost about Rs.47,000 per year, while the rate for the new hostel is Rs.85,000 a year.
