One of the two buildings housed mobile phone accessories’ godowns
NEW DELHI: About 60 shops were gutted in a major fire in two buildings at Karol Bagh here on Sunday. A fireman sustained injuries during the fire-fighting.
According to the Fire Department, the fire broke out around 4 p.m. on the second floor of a building housing mobile phone accessories’ godowns on Padam Singh Road and soon spread to the third floor. The leaping flames then engulfed another building on the opposite side of the narrow lane.
40 fire tenders used
Over 40 fire tenders and hydraulic-lifters were pressed into service. It took over five hours for the fire fighters to bring the blaze under control.
“The fire spread rapidly because of the highly inflammable substances such as batteries stocked in the godowns. One could hear the batteries explode one after the other. However, the firemen did a splendid job in preventing the blaze from spreading further,” said a police officer.
Chief Fire Officer R.C. Sharma and other senior Fire Service officials supervised the operation.
A fireman, Ranjeet, fell ill after inhaling toxic fumes during the fire-fighting operation and was admitted to Ram Manohar Lohia Hospital.
