Municipal councillors asked to guide staff; Commissioners to ensure proper implementation

Special emphasis on railway stations, bus terminals, airport and religious places

NEW DELHI: The Municipal Corporation of Delhi has launched a “Special Sanitation-cum-Cleanliness Drive” to ensure a clean Delhi before the onset of the festive season. Mayor Arti Mehra launched the drive at Hauz Khas Market here on Friday in the presence of MCD House leader Subhash Arya.

The Mayor said the drive would ensure maintenance of a proper standard of sanitation by field agencies with proper supervision at the ground-level. “The cleanliness drive cannot be successful with the mere participation of safai karamcharis. It requires a team effort by the supervisory staff and officers of various departments.”

MCD Standing Committee Chairman Vijender Gupta requested municipal councillors to cooperate and guide the staff involved in the drive. He also directed the Additional Commissioners and Deputy Commissioners of all 12 MCD zones across the city to ensure proper implementation of various guidelines.

Mr. Arya said officers of the Environment Management Services Department were required to ensure proper disposal of “malba” and waste products in an environmentally-friendly manner. Special emphasis would be laid on the Old and New Delhi railway stations, the Inter-State Bus Terminals, the airport and religious places. Special cleaning drives will also be undertaken in slum clusters by involving non-government organisations and residents. As part of the drive, the public will also be persuaded to reduce its usage of polythene bags and dispose them properly.

The Mayor has directed the officials of the Engineering Department to ensure that all accumulated malba is removed from the roads, streets and other public places and deposited at the earmarked sites in each ward. “Repairs, washing and cleaning of dalaos/dustbins will be carried out. All road signs, zebra crossings will be re-painted. Grass and vegetation will be removed from roads and footpaths,” she added.

The Mayor also ordered repair of all public conveniences under the MCD. Damaged mobile toilet vans will also be repaired under the drive. The Horticulture Department has been asked to ensure proper upkeep of MCD parks and re-paint their boundary walls and maintain them in a proper condition.
