NEW DELHI: A minor inmate of Nirmal Chhaya, a State Government-run shelter home for women in Hari Nagar here, has turned pregnant after a criminal assault on her allegedly by a water-trolley vendor about six months ago. The accused, 41-year-old Mohan Lal, has been arrested.
The Hari Nagar police received a complaint from the 16-year-old victim recently alleging that she was criminally assaulted by a water-trolley vendor about six months ago. She told the police that Mohan Lal took her to the bathroom of her school near the shelter home and forced himself on her. The victim, who was then studying in Class IX, said she did not report the matter to anyone as Mohan Lal had threatened to kill her.
However, she decided to lodge a complaint after she came to know that she had become pregnant.
Deputy Commissioner of Police (West Delhi) Robin Hibu said Mohan Lal was tracked down on Tuesday and a case of criminal assault was registered against him. During interrogation, Mohan Lal purportedly confessed to having assaulted the girl.
The shelter home houses about 1,500 girls and women. The police are interrogating Mohan Lal to find out if he had abused any other inmate of the shelter home in Hari Nagar. The Delhi Government has ordered an enquiry into the incident.
