NEW DELHI: With the teaching community in the Capital agitated over certain recommendations of the pay review committee, Delhi University Vice-Chancellor Deepak Pental has decided to throw his weight behind his colleagues.

Prof. Pental wrote to the Union Human Resource Development Minister on Friday requesting the officials to take into consideration representations of the teachers on various proposals of the committee.

The review committee headed by former Jawaharlal Nehru University Vice-Chancellor G.K. Chadha was set up by the University Grants Commission to revise the pay-scales and improve the service conditions of university and college teachers.

The issue of the proposed post of professor of eminence in the universities finds a mention in the letter. “I feel that the new post of professor of eminence should be at a bigger level. Professors of eminence should not be confined to the level of university but should be at the national level. They should be selected by a board comprising eminent persons themselves,” Prof. Pental noted.

Meanwhile, at a meeting held at Jamia Millia Islamia on Friday the Federation of Central Universities Teachers’ Associations reiterated its demands.

“All the Readers, associate professors, lecturers in the selection grade and those who were in the pre-revised scale of Rs.12,000-18,300 must be placed in pay band 4 instead of the pay band 3. We also strongly feel that promotion to professorship in colleges of Central universities must be introduced as Readers have been stagnating at the same post for several years,” said FEDCUTA president Aditya Narayan Misra. “We are waiting for a response from the UGC and the Ministry. We will go into an agitation mode if these issues are not resolved,” he warned.
