Delhi’s oldest Ramlila, staged at Ramlila Grounds since the times of Mughal emperor Bahadur Shah Zafar, is in bad shape today.

The daily procession from Esplanade Road to Ramlila Grounds with its return along the same route at night was a centre of attraction even for foreign dignitaries. No longer.

One of the two beautiful wooden-horse chariots with silver carvings has been missing for some years now. The ancient Ram temple on Esplanade Road, which was the originating point for the procession, is under control of unauthorised persons. A part of the Ramlila’s prime property in a corner plot to house the chariots in Darya Ganj has been encroached upon by a tea-stall owner and the tin structure on the rest of the plot has fallen down.

The Delhi Government should take over the Ramlila and maintain its heritage status as declared by UNESCO in the same manner as the Mysore Dasara controlled by the Karnataka Government.

Banaras calling

Banaras Hindu University is the country’s largest residential Central university with 60 hostels and 15,000 students. But there is no student union here like in other Central universities such as JNU, DU or AMU. We do not have the right to choose our representatives to take up our concerns and problems.

If a village with a population of 500 deserves representation in a panchayat, a campus of 15,000 definitely deserves it too. We are being deprived of our democratic right and are suffering at the hands of an autocratic university administration.

It is high time a student union was allowed inside the university.

Consumer woes

Within three months of purchasing a Toshiba M600 Notebook from HCL under a three-year extended global warranty for which extra money was paid, the inner layer of the LCD screen broke while I was using it.

When I contacted the Toshiba service centre in Jaipur (HCL Infosystems Ltd.), they asked me to pay Rs.26,000 for replacing the LCD. I contacted HCL and Toshiba and requested for a technical investigation of the notebook to find out the cause of damage. HCL said: “Notebook replacement is subject to approval of Toshiba.” Toshiba concluded the matter saying “mishandling as cause of damage” without any technical investigation of notebook. Now I have to move a consumer court to seek justice.

In a jam

Huge traffic jams on Delhi roads due to water-logging are common after every spell of heavy rain. Earlier, only low-lying areas like Minto Bridge used to get flooded. Now the menace has spread to the entire city.

It does not speak well of the Municipal Corporation’s sense of duty with such a huge staff. The citizens fervently appeal to the civic authorities and the Delhi Government to find a permanent solution to the perennial problem.
