NEW DELHI: Delhi Nationalist Congress Party president and Badarpur MLA Ramvir Singh Bidhuri on Tuesday met Lieutenant-Governor Tejendra Khanna and urged him to immediately order stopping of construction of the Jaitpur landfill site at Tajpur Pahari in his constituency as it poses a major environmental threat to the fragile ecology of the area.
Mr. Bidhuri said he also informed Mr. Khanna that the land on which the sanitary landfill has been planned belongs to the Gram Sabha as also to some private individuals. He said neither had the Government so far acquired the land nor had it paid any compensation for it.
Stating that the proposed project was to come up on quarries that are over 100 feet deep and spread over 130 bigha of land, the MLA said the site was surrounded by five villages and 70 colonies in which lakhs of people reside. Dumping of garbage here, he said, would harm the environment leading to both air and water pollution.
The Badarpur MLA suggested that instead of a sanitary landfill, the site should be used for construction of schools, colleges, parks and shopping complexes.
Or better still, he said, it can be used as a “permanent water body by getting it filled by flood water, transferred from Agra canal or Gurgaon canal or by discharging all the storm water drains of the area in near vicinity to create poundage”.
