NEW DELHI: To make the upcoming “Kanwar Yatra” successful, Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit has written to the Leader of the Opposition in the Delhi Assembly, Jagdish Mukhi, soliciting his support in the preparations.

In her letter, Ms. Dikshit stated that the yatra due to be held in the latter half of July and the first week of August had become a symbol of social harmony in the country.

Since a number of organisations have been organising camps for Kanwarias, she said it was essential that the Delhi Government and the Opposition cooperate to make the yatra a success. The Chief Minister has urged Prof. Mukhi to offer any suggestions he might deem essential for the yatra’s success.

Also, she asked the BJP leader to inform her of any difficulties that might be coming in the way of providing facilities to the Kanwarias.

While the Chief Minister has asked Prof. Mukhi to apprise all the BJP MLAs of the contents of the letter, Congress MLA and chief whip Ramakant Goswami has addressed a similar letter to his party colleagues in the Assembly.

When contacted, Prof. Mukhi said he would urge the Delhi Government to increase the number of camps run by it from the present 12.

Also, he said, while most of the camps are organised by private groups, the Government can help them in improving the waterproofing as the yatra takes place during the peak monsoon period.

Prof. Mukhi said he would be sending a formal reply elucidating all the essential areas where improvements can be made for facilitating the movement and stay of the Kanwarias in Delhi.
