A travel agent, his elder brother and sister-in-law hurt in early morning robbery attempt

NEW DELHI: Three unidentified men opened fire at a young travel agent, his elder brother and sister-in-law inflicting serious bullet injuries on the three during a sensational robbery attempt at Mayur Vihar Phase II in East Delhi in the early hours of Saturday.

The family was returning to its Mehrauli home after meeting an ailing relative in neighbouring Ghaziabad.

It all happened around 4-30 a.m. when 31-year-old Surender Singh, his brother Bijender Singh (45) and sister-in-law Kanta (40) stopped at a traffic intersection on their way back to Mehrauli to swap the wheel. “I was tired of continuous driving and asked Bijender to swap over. In the meantime, three men in their early 20s stopped their motorcycle close to our car and tried to snatch money from Bijender,” recalled Surender, who sustained three bullet injuries and is recuperating at Guru Tegh Bahadur Hospital at Dilshad Garden in East Delhi.

Victims resist

When Bijender offered resistance, one of the robbers allegedly attacked him with a knife.

But Bijender held the knife with his right hand and bent the blade.

At this, another miscreant fired at him causing a bullet injury in his left leg.

“While I was grappling with one of them, his accomplice fired three gunshots at me. One grazed past me and the other two hit me in the stomach and the left shoulder. It was early morning and the road was almost deserted,” said Surender Singh, who runs a travel agency at Mehrauli.

One of the robbers broke the rear glass of the car with a gunshot injuring Kanta Devi. She got hit on her head by the shards of the broken glass and received several stitches. The three criminals then sped away.

Rakesh, the eldest of the three Singh brothers, said: “The police reached the spot after five calls to the Police Control Room. They took the injured to Lal Bahadur Shastri Hospital where Bijender and Kanta were discharged after first-aid and from where Surender was shifted to GTB Hospital.”

A case has been registered under Section 307 (attempt to murder) and Section 394 (voluntarily causing hurt in committing robbery) of the Indian Penal Code at the Mandawali police station.

The case comes hot on the heels of a similar daylight robbery in Mayur Vihar on June 12 when two motorcycle-borne young men had accosted two sisters, Santosh and Sudesh, and asked them to hand over their belongings.

When the siblings offered resistance, they were shot at by the miscreants, one of whom was caught was Santosh and handed over to the police.
