Charred to death

NEW DELHI: Three persons, including two sex workers, were charred to death in a fire that broke out in a multi-storey building on G. B. Road in the Capital's red light area on Friday morning.

According to the Fire Service Department, the fire broke out at 4-50 a.m. and eight fire tenders took more than two hours to douse the blaze. Two of the victims have been identified as Farida (35) and Nitu (24). The body of a 25-year-old man could not be identified as it was badly charred. Those in the building were sleeping when the fire broke out, the police said. Some of them were rescued by policemen who were on a routine patrol in the area. "The building was filled with smoke and visibility was very poor," said S-I Yashpal.

Medicines seized

NEW DELHI: A former Army man and a Naik have been arrested by the Crime Branch of the Delhi police for allegedly siphoning off medicines at the Army Hospital in Dhaula Kuan. According to the police, 42-year-old Kuldeep Singh, a retired Hawaldar, procured drugs from James John, working as a nursing assistant in the Army Hospital, and sold them in the market. Kuldeep was arrested at Chandni Chowk here on Tuesday. James was arrested later at his instance. Medicines worth Rs. 5 lakhs have allegedly been seized.

Nabbed for burglaries

NEW DELHI: Four auto drivers allegedly involved in four cases of burglary have been arrested at Alipur here.

Acting on a tip-off, the police arrested Rajender, Mani Ram, Ram Kewal and Rakesh on Thursday when they assembled at a farm to allegedly commit dacoity. Their fifth accomplice, Sahib Singh, managed to escape, the police said.

Killed in accident

NEW DELHI: Two persons were killed and one was injured in a road accident at Ambedkar Nagar here on Thursday. According to the police, Nayani Ram (40), Mithilesh (23) and Pappu (30) were riding a motorcycle when its tyre burst and it hit a railing. Nayani Ram died on the spot, while Mithilesh succumbed to his injuries in hospital.

Cop commits suicide

NEW DELHI: A 46-year-old Delhi Armed Police constable allegedly committed suicide at Teen Murti here on Friday. According to the police, Brijpal, deployed with the 7th Battalion of DAP, was found hanging in a barrack on Friday evening.
