Tributes paid

NEW DELHI: Glowing tributes were paid to freedom fighter and social reformer Swami Shardhanand on his 150th birth anniversary in the Capital on Thursday.

At a ceremony organised by the Municipal Corporation of Delhi at "Balidan Sthal" in Town Hall where Swami Shardhanand's statue is installed, Deputy Mayor Anita Babbar garlanded the statue. She also administered oath to the MCD officials, employees and other present to follow the ideals of Swami Shardhanand.

Rape accused arrested

NEW DELHI: A 21-year-old computer professional has been arrested for allegedly raping a woman in Sunlight Colony here.

According to the police, Sarfaraz was known to the victim's younger sister and was a frequent visitor to their home for the past one year. When the victim went to the Janakpuri District Centre for shopping on Wednesday evening, Sarfaraz took her to Sunlight colony in Nizamuddin in an auto-rickshaw on some pretext.

According to the complainant, Sarfaraz offered her cold drink laced with sedatives and assaulted her criminally in a semi-conscious state, the police said. Medical examination of the victim confirmed the criminal assault.

Remand extended

NEW DELHI: A special court in suburban Ghaziabad on Thursday extended the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) custody of Moninder Singh Pandher and his servant Surender Koli, prime accused in the Nithari killings case at Noida, till March 2.

The accused were produced in the court of Special Judicial Magistrate Sapna Mishra in the morning and remanded to CBI custody. The proceedings lasted just five minutes.

The CBI got custody of the accused for the fourth time after the case was handed over to it from the Uttar Pradesh police early last month in the wake of allegations that the police were hand in glove with the accused. Elaborate security arrangements had been made at the court to prevent any untoward incident.

`Robbers' nabbed

NEW DELHI: Six persons allegedly involved in several cases of robberies in buses have been arrested in Moti Nagar here. The police laid a trap on Wednesday evening near the Prem Nagar railway crossing and arrested them while they were allegedly planning to a commit robbery in a bus plying on Najafgarh Road.

The accused have been identified as Shaukeen, Akeel Ahmed, Shahadat Ali, Rasool Mohammed, Riyazuddin and Shamshuddin.

During interrogation, the accused purportedly confessed to having committed robberies in several buses.

LubeAsia planned

NEW DELHI: LubeAsia 2007, an exhibition on lubricants, greases, fluids, raw material, packaging and technology, will be held at NSCI Exhibition Centre here from February 24 to 26.

The exhibition, being held in India for the first time, is expected to fulfil the long felt needs of the lubricant industry to have a platform that could be used to launch any product, demonstrate new technology and impart any kind of education or awareness programme for lube users, according to the Director of Nexgen Exhibitions Limited, V.K. Bansal.
