Three days after the main accused in the Vasant Vihar gang-rape case was found hanging in his prison cell in the high-security Tihar Central Jail here, another undertrial, a woman this time, allegedly hanged herself inside a cell on Thursday.
The incident came to light around 3 p.m. when Reshma, who shared a cell with two other women inmates in Jail No.6, was found hanging from the ventilator grill with a noose around her neck made of a chunni . The inmates alerted the guards, who informed their seniors.
She was brought down and taken to Deen Dayal Upadhyaya Hospital where she was declared dead on arrival. “The family members of the deceased have been informed about her death. The matter is being inquired into by a judicial officer as per Section 176 of the Criminal Procedure Code. The exact cause of death would be known after receipt of the inquiry report which also includes the post-mortem examination report by forensic specialists,” said a jail spokesperson.
Reshma, a resident of Sagarpur in South-West Delhi, was arrested by the Delhi Police in connection with a kidnapping case in Jaitpur on November 1, 2011. She was then sent to judicial custody in Tihar jail. According to jail sources, the undertrial was under depression and was reportedly on medication. It is also alleged that she had earlier attempted suicide.
Unconfirmed reports suggested that Reshma had been granted bail by the court concerned, but could not come out of jail as she was not able to arrange the surety bond. However, the jail authorities said they had no such information.
In the wake of the mysterious death of gang-rape main accused Ram Singh, the jail sources had said that 250 closed-circuit television cameras would soon be installed to keep a watch on the activities of inmates, particularly those showing signs of depression and suicidal tendencies.
