NEW DELHI: Motorists and commuters in East Delhi, Central Delhi and New Delhi faced major traffic jams for the second day in a row on Wednesday because of a rally taken out by the Bharatiya Janata Party and the ongoing trade fair at Pragati Maidan. The traffic police struggled to ensure smooth movement of vehicles on Vikas Marg, ITO, Delhi Gate, Raj Ghat and Connaught Place during the afternoon.
In view of the BJP rally from Raj Ghat to Jantar Mantar, the traffic police had closed Bahadur Shah Zafar Marg and Aruna Asaf Ali Marg during the morning rush hour.
This led to a spill-over of vehicles on to other roads in the area, resulting in slowing down of traffic. The entire Vikas Marg, Ring Road stretch between ISBT and Sarai Kale Khan, ITO, Deen Dayal Upadhyay Marg, Netaji Subhash Chandra Marg and Sikandra Road remained choked with traffic between 10 a.m. and 1 p.m.
With the visiting Chinese President Hu Jintao addressing a meeting at Vigyan Bhavan, several roads were closed to traffic during the function. Similarly, Sardar Patel Marg remained affected as Mr. Hu's cavalcade passed through the area on way to the airport from where he left for Agra. Roads in and around Connaught Place and Jantar Mantar, where the BJP held its rally, also remained affected due to diversions and heavy rush of vehicles.
The traffic police have advised motorists to avoid roads around Ramlila Ground, Delhi Gate and Jantar Mantar on Thursday in view of two major rallies.
