Aligarh Muslim University Vice-Chancellor Abdul Azis on Thursday said that students' union elections will be held on January 19 as per Supreme Court directives and Lyngdoh Committee guidelines.

An agreement between students and the university authorities on December 19 “clearly and categorically mentions that the elections would be held on the basis of Lyngdoh recommendations in letter and in spirit,” Mr. Azis told reporters here.

The V-C's comments came a day after a group of students held a demonstration demanding that the elections be held according to the regulations of the original AMU Act as was happening for the last 90 years.

Mr. Azis said the university would not allow any group to “derail the electoral process as it will only lead to legal complications in view of the directives of the highest court of the country.”

A senior university official pointed that a prominent student leader who is presently opposing the demand for enforcement of the Lyngdoh recommendations “was himself one of the 14 student signatories to the agreement which had been reached between student protesters and university authorities on December 19.” - PTI
