Acting on a report published in The Hindu on December 26, Rajasthan Governor Margaret Alva has extended financial assistance to an 11-year-old rape victim who is undergoing treatment in Jaipur’s J.K. Lone Hospital.

On Saturday, Ms. Alva called on the child in the paediatric surgical ward and enquired of the doctors about her treatment.

“The governor came across the report about the girl published in The Hindu and extended a financial assistance of Rs. 51,000 for her treatment,” sources in Raj Bhavan told this reporter.

The girl, hailing from a poor Muslim family which came to Jaipur a year ago from Darbhanga in Bihar, was abducted and raped by five men in Sikar district four months ago. She has undergone several surgical procedures, including anorectoplasty, to repair the perineal region. The doctors say her wounds will take time to heal.

The girl is also in trauma but has not received any counselling to overcome the agonising experience.
