Two young lovers allegedly committed suicide by jumping into a dry well after the girl's family opposed their marriage, police said on Monday.

The 21-year-old girl and her 23-year-old lover hailed from Garhi Ruthal village in Mahendergarh district of Haryana, about 45 km from here, they said.

The girl was a student of BA (final year) while the boy was a graduate and both belonged to the Dhanak (Scheduled Caste) community, they said.

When the girl's parents realised that the two had decided to marry, they arranged her marriage with another boy, they said, adding that out of frustration, both committed suicide on October 29.

In a similar incident, two teenaged lovers allegedly committed suicide by jumping in front of a speeding train in Sant Kabir Nagar in Uttar Pradesh.

Jitendra Vishwakarma (19) and Tikkal (18) took the extreme step on Sunday as their parents disapproved of the relationship, they said. - PTI
