Delhi Pradesh Congress Committee president J.P. Agarwal on Friday led a delegation of the 10 newly nominated Aldermen and met Lieutenant- Governor Tejinder Khanna to complain to him that they were not administered oath of office by the Mayor at a specially convened meeting of the Delhi Municipal Corporation on Thursday.

MCD agenda

Mr. Agarwal said it was in the agenda of the MCD that the Aldermen would be given the oath of office, but the Mayor, under pressure from the Bharatiya Janata Party, did not administer them the oath of office.

Stating that the post of the Mayor was above the party, he said a Mayor should never act on the advice of the party. “But in this case, the Mayor acted against the spirit of the Constitution by not allowing the Aldermen to take oath,'' he charged.

The Lieutenant-Governor patiently listened to the complaint of the DPCC delegation and assured them that he would ensure that a special session of the MCD is called soon for the Aldermen to be sworn in.
