Kanpur: Agitating workers of a jute mill here allegedly made hostage three officials for hours to press for their demands for their dues.

Additional Labour Commissioner Sriram Singh said on Wednesday that workers of J K Jute Mill on Saturday night gheraoed the officials to press for their demands. The workers also made hostage three officials of the mill, who were released after police and administration intervened.

The district administration has called a meeting on January 16 to resolve the issue between the two parties.

J K Jute Mill Labour Union leader Dharampal Singh alleged they the management was unfair to them. Delay in payment of salaries and their dues were some of their key grudges, he said.

A senior official of the mill said the unit was already in loss. The production, which was 70 tonnes at the time of its start, has reduced to 45 tonnes. Frequent agitations like these affect the work, he said. — PTI
