NEW DELHI: Municipal Corporation of Delhi Standing Committee chairman Vijender Gupta has asked the MCD Commissioner to initiate strong action against university students found to be involved in defacing public property in the run-up to the Delhi University Students’ Union polls.

In a statement on Wednesday, Mr. Gupta said: “Sticking campaign posters is a violation of the West Bengal Prevention of Defacement of Property Act. I have asked the Municipal Commissioner to ensure that no area under the MCD’s jurisdiction is defaced with posters.”

The Chairman said the Standing Committee had recently decided on rigorous implementation of this Act and it was the responsibility of the zonal Deputy Commissioners to enforce it.

According to Mr. Gupta, since the Delhi High Court had also ordered the civic body to implement the Act, a refusal to comply with the same may invite contempt of court. The Lyngdoh Committee had also recommended a prohibition on sticking posters for election campaigning, he concluded.
