Nearly 1,000 kg of silver, which was being transported on board Mumbai Rajdhani, was seized at the New Delhi railway station by the Delhi Police Crime Branch on Saturday.

The precious metal has been handed over to the Railway Police.

“Acting on a specific tip-off, we carried out searches and seized the silver. Enquiries revealed that the sender had claimed that electrical goods were being transported, which raises suspicion that the consignment was being sent through the hawala channel and it could well be part of an unaccounted-for transaction,” said a police officer.

Enforcement agencies

The police have initiated investigations to ascertain the identity of the sender.

Other enforcement agencies, such as the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence, could also be involved to probe the matter, the officer said.
