A major link to Marad; school students affected

Kozhikode: The Payyanakkal unit of the Muslim Youth League has demanded that the repair work of the Payyanakkal road be completed immediately.

A convention of the youth league held recently noted that the contract had been taken up nearly five months back. But no works had been undertaken till now. The material for the repair works, which had been lying in front of the Payyanakkal government high school for months, was no longer to be found there. The authorities had said that the contractor had withdrawn from the work.

The road was a major link to Marad with nearly 20 city buses and other vehicles plying on the route. Huge potholes had developed in front of the Government Vocational Higher Secondary School, Payyanakkal, posing a major threat to motorists, especially during nights.

Nearly 2000 students studying at the Payyanakkal HS and others, including madrassa students, pass through this road. Auto-rickshaw drivers refuse trips to this area because of the pitiable condition of the road. The convention also said that the authorities were not giving convincing replies when contacted. Unit president P.V. Shamsudheen presided. General secretary Nalakath Jamsheed and treasurer K.M. Rasheed spoke.
