Leela Namboodirippad, popularly known as Sumangala, who won the Kendra Sahithya Akademi award for children’s literature, was honoured at an august gathering at Wadakkanchery on Sunday.

Honouring the veteran writer, who has written more than 40 books, most of them for children, Minister for Co-operation C.N. Balakrishnan said the award was in recognition for her stories of good values.

P.K. Biju, MP, presided over the function.

“Libraries should promote the reading habit in the new generation,” he said. K. Radhakrishnan MLA, former MLA A.C. Moideen and others participated.

Apart from her famous Panchatantra stories, which has crossed over two dozen editions, Sumangala’s important works include Mithayippothi, Neypaayasam, Manchatikkuru, Kurinhiyum Kootukarum and Nadodi Cholkathakal.

Sumangala has also worked as the Public Relations Officer at Kerala Kalamandalam for over two decades.
