A variety of cultural programmes by children suffering from Down Syndrome marked the World Down Syndrome Day observance here on Friday.

Therambil Ramakrishnan, MLA, inaugurated the celebrations organised by the Down Syndrome Support Group and the Indian Academy of Paediatrics.

Children enthralled the audience with their spectacular performance. In all, 12 items of cultural programmes were staged including Mohiniyattom and folk dance. Noted Playback singer Franco sang for the children. The theme of this year was “Health and wellbeing access and equality for all”. More than 150 children have registered in the Down Syndrome Support Group, started by the Department of Paediatrics, Government Medical College Thrissur. A Down Syndrome Clinic has been functioning on the 21st of every month here. Medical problems are managed with the help of allied departments such as ophthalmology, ENT, psychiatry, cardiology, neurology and physical medicine, according to the organisers.
