Knowledge imparted on the free software

KOZHIKODE: A two-day Linux workshop was organised on the National Institute of Technology, Calicut (NIT-C) campus, near here, by the Indian Society for Technical Education (ISTE) on Saturday and Sunday last.

The workshop was aimed at imparting basic knowledge to those still alien to the Linux operating system. Linux is a free and open-source software, the knowledge of which has become a must for engineering students because of its increasing demand and utility in the industry.

The event was attended by over 250 persons. The audience included first semester students to postgraduate amateurs. The workshop was inaugurated by ISTE NIT-C student chapter chairman Vikash Thakur.

The workshop consisted of two sessions, the first comprising a series of talks and demonstrations regarding installation, software packages, file systems and shell programming held on Saturday. This was followed by a hands-on session held on Saturday evening and on Sunday.

ISTE is a national club working towards increasing the technical knowledge of students. The student chapter in the college has been conducting many activities to encourage young talent. The workshop was its first major event this year.
